Meaning of Health

Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not just the absence of disease or infirmity (illness).



Meaning of Personal Health

Personal health means the practices and habits of an individual to keeps and maintain good health and prevent sickness.

Examples: keeping the body clean, wearing clean clothes, eating balanced food, exercising regularly.



Meaning of School Health


School health refers to all activities carried out in the school to promote the health of pupils, teachers, and other school workers.

This includes health education, health services, and keeping the school environment clean and safe.



Meaning of Community Health

Community health means the health activities and services that help to improve and protect the health of people living in a community.

Examples: community sanitation, immunization, health campaigns.




Determinants of Health


  • Heredity : Health conditions inherited from parents, e.g. sickle cell anemia, asthma.

  • Environment : The surroundings where a person lives, e.g. clean or dirty surroundings, availability of clean water, good housing.

  • Lifestyle : The way a person lives, e.g. eating good food, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and excessive drinking.



Characteristics of a Healthy Person


  1. A healthy person can works without getting tired easily.

  2. A healthy person can relate well with others (good social relationship).

  3. A healthy person Thinks clearly and understands tasks well (good mental health).

  4. A healthy person can Resists infections and diseases (good immunity).

  5. A healthy person Is emotionally stable (does not get angry easily or depressed).

  6. A healthy person Has no deformities and is physically fit.


School Health Programme

This is the set of activities put in place in the school to protect and improve the health of pupils and staff.



Components of the School Health Programme


  1. Healthful School Environment — clean classrooms, safe water, good toilets, good ventilation.

  2. School Health Services — first aid, health inspection, immunization.

  3. Health Education — teaching pupils how to care for themselves and avoid diseases.

  4. School-Community Relationship — parents and community members assist the school in health matters.

  5. Nutritional Services — provision of healthy and balanced meals for students.



Community Health Activities


  1. Environmental sanitation (keeping the environment clean)

  2. Control of communicable diseases (through immunization)

  3. Provision of clean water supply

  4. Health campaigns and talks

  5. Proper sewage and refuse disposal
