Meaning of Socialization
Socialization is the process through which individuals learn the norms, values, customs, and behaviours necessary to function in society. It helps individuals integrate into their culture and develop social relationships.
Stages (Types) of Socialization
- Primary Socialization: Occurs in early childhood within the family. Here, children learn foundational norms and behaviors from parents and close caregivers.
- Secondary Socialization: Takes place later, in broader social environments such as schools, religious institutions, workplaces, and peer groups.
Agents of Socialization
- Family – The first teacher of every child. Teaches language, respect, and morals.
- School – Teaches knowledge, discipline, cooperation, and punctuality.
- Peer Group – Friends and age-mates who influence dressing, language, and habits.
- Religion – Churches, mosques, and traditional shrines teach moral values, truthfulness, and fear of God.
- Mass Media – Radio, television, newspapers, and internet pass information and influence behaviour.
- Community and Clubs – Groups like Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Guide, Red Cross, and local age-grade associations encourage unity and service.
Processes of Socialization
- Direct Teaching – Parents or teachers explain and show what to do.
- Imitation – Copying the behaviour of elders, teachers, or role models.
- Practice – Doing something repeatedly until you master it, e.g. greeting properly or playing an instrument.
- Observation – Watching how others behave and learning from it.
- Participation – Taking part in activities like cleaning the compound or joining cultural dances.

- It promotes peace, unity, and understanding.
