Meaning of Collage
Collage is an art technique in which different materials are cut and glued onto a surface to create a picture, design, or composition.
These materials may include paper, fabric, photographs, dried leaves, magazine cutouts, cloth, sandpaper, pieces of plastic, thread, or any found object that can be pasted on a flat surface. The word “collage” comes from the French word coller, which means “to glue” or “to stick.”
In collage, artists select and combine various textures, colours, shapes, and objects to create a unique artwork. It allows room for creativity, recycling, and imagination. Collage is commonly done on cardboard, thick paper, or wooden boards.
Materials and Tools for Collage Production
- Materials: Coloured paper, cardboard, old magazines, newspaper cuttings, fabric scraps, foil, pieces of thread, sandpaper, dry leaves, feathers, and other textured objects.
- Tools: Scissors, glue or gum, razor blade, brush, pencil, ruler, and a baseboard or cardboard.
Steps in Collage Production
- Choose a theme or idea – Decide what the collage will represent (e.g., a flower, a landscape, a face, a school environment, etc.).
- Select your materials – Gather different paper textures, fabrics, or objects based on your chosen theme.
- Draw the outline – Lightly sketch your design on the baseboard or cardboard to serve as a guide.
- Cut your materials – Carefully cut the materials into shapes that match the design you have drawn.
- Arrange the pieces – Before gluing, place the cut pieces on the board to check how they look.
- Paste the pieces – Apply glue on the back of each piece and gently paste it in place.
- Allow it to dry – Let the collage dry properly so the materials stick well and don’t fall off.
- Add final touches – Add decorations, details, or extra textures to make your collage look attractive.
