A computer virus can be define as a program (or software) that is designed to harm or damage a computers.

Just like viruses that make people sick, a computer virus spreads from one computer to another, mostly through infected files, flash drives, CDs, emails, or the internet.




Characteristics of Computer Virus


  1. A computer virus Can copy itself (it multiplies).

  2. A computer virus Spreads from one computer to another.

  3. A computer virus Can hide inside other programs or files.

  4. A computer virus May slow down or damage the computer.

  5. A computer virus Can corrupt or delete files.


Sources of Computer Virus


  1. 💻 Computer viruses can enter a computer through Infected flash drives or external hard disks.

  2. 📀 Computer viruses can enter a computer through Infected CDs, DVDs, or memory cards.

  3. 📧 Computer viruses can enter a computer through Email attachments from unknown people.

  4. 🌐 Computer viruses can enter a computer through Downloading files or software from unsafe websites.

  5. 📂 Computer viruses can enter a computer through Sharing infected files over a network.



Types of Computer Virus




Type of Virus What it does
1 Boot sector virus it attacks the part of the computer that starts (boots) it up.
2 File virus It attaches itself to files and spreads when the files are opened.
3 Macro virus iT infects documents (like Word or Excel files).
4 Worm A type of virus that spreads across networks without attaching to files.
5 Trojan horse A harmful program that looks like a useful program to trick the user.



Effects of Computer Virus


  1. Loss of important files.

  2. Slow running of the computer.

  3. Frequent computer crashes (the system stops working).

  4. Display of strange messages or pictures.

  5. Corruption of data (data becomes useless or damaged).

  6. Damage to programs or the operating system.



Ways of Preventing Computer Virus



  1. Install and update antivirus software (e.g., Norton, Avast, Kaspersky).

  2. Avoid opening email attachments from unknown people.

  3. Do not use unknown or infected flash drives or disks.

  4. Avoid downloading software from unsafe or untrusted websites.

  5. Always scan external devices (like flash drives) before use.

  6. Regularly backup important files in case of virus attacks.

  6. The computer may not boot (start) properly.

  7. The computer behaves in an unusual way (e.g. strange sounds, screen flickering).
