CLASSIFICATION OF CROPS BASED ON LIFE SPAN

Crops can be classified based on life span into three different categories;

  • Annual Crops
  • Biennial Crops
  • Perennial Crops





  1. Annual crops :   These are plants that complete their life circle withing one growing season.They are typically planted, grow, produce seeds and die withing a year. Example include :   soybeans, corn, rice, wheat etc.


  2. Biennial crops:   These are plants that complete their life over two growing season. They grwo vegetatively during first year and then flower and produce seeds during the second year before dying. Example incluude   onions,carrots,wild-cabbage etc.


  3. Perennial Crops :   These are plant that can live for more than two years and can produce harvest repeatedly without needing to be replanted each year. Example include : fuit trees like mango, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cashew,cocoa, etc.
